Hyperpigmentation Dos & Don'ts: 10 Skincare Mistakes to Avoid

Hyperpigmentation Dos & Don'ts: 10 Skincare Mistakes to Avoid

When dark spots or uneven-looking skin tone appear, it can be tempting to throw everything at your skin.

A brightening serum. Vitamin C. Glycolic acid. Retinol. Another exfoliant.

But when it comes to hyperpigmentation, more skincare isn't necessarily better skincare.

Using too many active ingredients, over-exfoliating or constantly changing your routine can leave skin feeling overwhelmed, particularly if your skin is already sensitive or easily triggered.

At AMPERNA®, we take a barrier-first approach.

Start with a consistent everyday routine. Support your skin barrier. Then gradually introduce targeted ingredients depending on what you'd like from your skincare.

Here are 10 hyperpigmentation dos and don'ts to help you build a more considered routine.

1. DO: Make Sun Protection Part of Your Everyday Routine

If uneven-looking pigmentation is a concern, sun protection is an important part of your everyday routine.

UV exposure can contribute to the development and darkening of pigmentation, including sunspots and existing areas of uneven-looking skin tone.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen according to its directions and combine it with sensible sun-protection measures such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and wearing a hat.

Sun protection becomes particularly important when your skincare routine includes active ingredients such as glycolic acid or retinoids.

Think of SPF as part of your skincare routine, rather than something you only reach for at the beach.

2. DON'T: Pick at Breakouts

The breakout might be temporary.

The mark it leaves behind can hang around much longer.

Inflammation or injury to the skin can contribute to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, commonly known as PIH. Breakouts are one common trigger. AMPERNA's existing PIH guide also identifies squeezing and popping pimples as forms of skin trauma associated with these marks.

As tempting as it might be, try to avoid squeezing, scratching and picking at your skin.

If you're particularly prone to marks after breakouts, this is one skincare habit worth breaking.

3. DO: Start With Your Skin Barrier

It's easy to become so focused on the pigmentation that you forget about the rest of your skin.

Before building a routine full of brightening and resurfacing ingredients, establish your everyday foundation.

At AMPERNA®, that means keeping things considered and consistent.

A simple foundation could be:

BALANCE → RESCUE → HYDRATE

Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser [BALANCE] gently cleanses.

Pro+ DS Soothing Serum [RESCUE] provides postbiotic support.

Lightweight Soothing+ Emulsion [HYDRATE] provides lightweight hydration and barrier-supportive ingredients.

Once your everyday routine is established, you can gradually introduce additional products.

Support first. Actives second.

4. DON'T: Over-Exfoliate Your Skin

If exfoliating helps improve the appearance of dullness and uneven texture, exfoliating constantly must get you there faster.

Right?

Not necessarily.

Over-exfoliation can leave skin feeling dry, tight, sensitive or uncomfortable.

And remember that exfoliation doesn't only come from something labelled an "exfoliator".

AHAs, retinoids and some brightening formulas can all contribute to the overall active load within your routine.

Rather than concentrating on how many active ingredients you can use, concentrate on creating a routine your skin can tolerate consistently.

5. DO: Consider Targeted Brightening Ingredients

Once you've established your everyday routine, targeted brightening ingredients can be introduced depending on your skin and your goals.

Ingredients commonly found in skincare designed for uneven-looking skin tone include:

Alpha arbutin
Vitamin C
Niacinamide
Glycolic acid
Lactic acid
Retinoids

You don't necessarily need all of them.

AMPERNA® Pro+ Advanced Brightening Serum [SUPAGLOW] was developed specifically for people looking to introduce a targeted brightening step into their routine.

Its formula combines Alpha Arbutin, Oxyresveratrol, Niacinamide, Lactic Acid and 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, a Vitamin C derivative, alongside AMPERNA®'s postbiotic complex. It is designed to target the appearance of uneven skin tone and dullness while promoting a more radiant-looking complexion.

Where Does [SUPAGLOW] Fit?

SUPAGLOW is designed for evening use.

A simple routine could look like:

BALANCE → SUPAGLOW → HYDRATE

Or within a more established AMPERNA® routine:

BALANCE → RESCUE → SUPAGLOW → HYDRATE

If you're new to brightening actives, introduce SUPAGLOW gradually. Our current directions recommend beginning slowly, with the product FAQ suggesting 2–3 times per week before increasing frequency as your skin adjusts.

→ SHOP PRO+ ADVANCED BRIGHTENING SERUM [SUPAGLOW]

SUPAGLOW is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

6. DON'T: Introduce Every Active at the Same Time

You've bought SUPAGLOW.

You've got Vitamin C.

There's glycolic acid in the bathroom.

And you've decided tonight is the night you're finally going to start retinol.

That doesn't mean you should use everything at once.

One of the advantages of introducing products gradually is that you can actually understand how each one works within your routine.

Our approach is:

START → INTRODUCE → BUILD

Start with your everyday foundation.

Introduce one targeted product.

Give your skin time to adjust.

Then consider whether your routine actually needs anything else.

A longer routine isn't automatically a better routine.

7. DO: Consider Vitamin C in Your Morning Routine

Vitamin C is a popular antioxidant used in skincare routines focused on radiance and the appearance of uneven skin tone.

AMPERNA® Pro+ Vitamin C Hyaluronic Serum [REPAIR] allows you to introduce Vitamin C while maintaining a simple morning routine.

Try:

BALANCE → REPAIR → HYDRATE → SPF

Or, if RESCUE is already part of your everyday routine:

BALANCE → REPAIR → RESCUE → HYDRATE → SPF

Rather than constantly changing your skincare, think about where each product has a purpose.

[SUPAGLOW] can become your targeted evening brightening step.

[REPAIR] can become your morning antioxidant step.

8. DON'T: Assume Stronger Means Better

Skincare marketing has conditioned many of us to look for the strongest percentage, most aggressive exfoliation or fastest possible result.

But your skin doesn't necessarily need the strongest product.

It needs a routine you can use appropriately and consistently.

AMPERNA® 10% Pro+ Resurfacing Lotion [EXFOLIATE] contains 10% glycolic acid and can be introduced as a leave-on evening exfoliant.

Rather than using it indiscriminately alongside every other active product, give glycolic acid its own place within your routine.

On an Exfoliation Evening:

BALANCE → RESCUE → EXFOLIATE → HYDRATE

If you're new to chemical exfoliation, introduce it gradually and follow the product directions.

And because AHAs can increase sun sensitivity, sun protection during the day is important.

9. DO: Introduce Retinoids Gradually

Retinoids can have a place in more advanced skincare routines focused on the appearance of skin texture, tone and signs of ageing.

But again, you don't have to jump from a simple routine to using one every night.

AMPERNA® currently offers two approaches.

Pro+ Bio Resurfacing Retinol ALT [SUPERADIANCE]

If you're looking to explore a plant-derived retinol alternative, SUPERADIANCE contains bakuchiol alongside complementary skin-supportive ingredients.

Pro+ Bio Resurfacing Retinol RX [SUPERFOLIATE]

If you're ready to explore a Vitamin A derivative, SUPERFOLIATE contains Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (HPR) alongside ingredients including niacinamide. Both products remain part of AMPERNA's current skincare range.

Whichever path you choose, introduce retinoid skincare gradually rather than combining multiple new actives simultaneously.

10. DON'T: Expect Overnight Results

This might be the most important DON'T on the list.

Don't expect your skin to change overnight.

Pigmentation can be persistent, and its cause, depth and appearance vary considerably between people.

Constantly switching products because you haven't seen an immediate result can make it difficult to establish a consistent routine.

Instead:

Give your routine time.

Introduce new products gradually.

Take progress photos in consistent lighting.

Pay attention to how your skin feels.

And if you have pigmentation that is persistent, changing, unexplained or concerning, speak with your doctor or dermatologist.

BONUS: DON'T Forget Your Skin Barrier When Using Actives

There is a common misconception that once you start using active skincare, your simple products somehow become less important.

We think the opposite.

Your barrier-supportive routine becomes the foundation around which your targeted products are built.

You might use [SUPAGLOW] on one evening.

[EXFOLIATE] on another.

A retinoid on another.

But you don't necessarily need an active every night.

A simple evening can still be:

BALANCE → RESCUE → HYDRATE

That's not a night where you're doing "nothing".

Supporting your skin is part of the routine.

Our more detailed active-skincare guide explains how to alternate active and barrier-supportive evenings rather than stacking everything together.

So, What Should a Brightening Routine Look Like?

There isn't one perfect skincare routine for everyone.

But if your everyday AMPERNA® foundation is established and you're ready to build, here's an example.

MORNING

[BALANCE]
Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser

↓

[REPAIR]
Pro+ Vitamin C Hyaluronic Serum

↓

[RESCUE]
Pro+ DS Soothing Serum

↓

[HYDRATE]
Lightweight Soothing+ Emulsion

↓

[HYDRAPROTECT]
Pro+ Bio Soothing Day Mineral CC SPF15

EVENING

[BALANCE]
Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser

↓

[SUPAGLOW]
Pro+ Advanced Brightening Serum

↓

[RESCUE]
Pro+ DS Soothing Serum

↓

[HYDRATE]
Lightweight Soothing+ Emulsion

Then introduce products such as [EXFOLIATE], [SUPERADIANCE] or [SUPERFOLIATE] on selected evenings according to the individual product directions and how established your skin is with active skincare.

You don't need every active every night.

Build gradually.

Hyperpigmentation Dos & Don'ts FAQs

What is hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation describes areas of skin that appear darker than the surrounding skin because of increased pigmentation.

There are several types and potential causes, including sun exposure, hormonal influences and inflammation.

Rather than repeating the entire explanation here, we've created a dedicated guide:

→ READ: Help for Hyperpigmentation Sufferers

What is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation?

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH, refers to darker-looking marks that can develop following inflammation or injury to the skin.

Breakouts are one common example.

What ingredients should I look for in a brightening skincare routine?

Ingredients commonly used in skincare designed for brighter, more even-looking skin include Vitamin C, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, glycolic acid, lactic acid and retinoids.

Which ingredients are appropriate depends on your skin and existing routine. You don't need to introduce everything simultaneously.

Can I use Vitamin C and the AMPERNA® Brightening Serum [SUPAGLOW]?

Both products can have a place within an established routine.

One simple way to separate them is to use Vitamin C Serum [REPAIR] in your morning routine and [SUPAGLOW] in your evening routine, rather than layering multiple new active products at once.

Can I use [EXFOLIATE] and [SUPAGLOW] together?

You don't need to use them on the same evening.

If you're introducing active skincare, alternating products on different evenings can make your routine easier to manage.

[SUPAGLOW] itself also contains lactic acid, so it's worth considering the total number of exfoliating and active ingredients in your routine.

Can I use retinol and glycolic acid together?

You don't have to.

If your routine contains both a retinoid and glycolic acid, you may prefer to use them on different evenings rather than layering them together, particularly while your skin is adjusting.

What should I do if active skincare makes my skin feel irritated?

If your skin begins feeling uncomfortable, tight or excessively dry, reduce the frequency of active products and return to a simpler routine.

For AMPERNA® users, that may mean returning to:

BALANCE → RESCUE → HYDRATE

before gradually rebuilding your routine.

How long does hyperpigmentation take to fade?

There isn't one timeframe that applies to everyone.

Different types of pigmentation have different causes and can behave differently. Persistent pigmentation may also require professional assessment or treatment.

If you're concerned about pigmentation or a changing area of skin, speak with your doctor or dermatologist.
