Skin Confidence in your 40s

Skin Confidence in your 40s

投稿者 Wesley Taylor 投稿日:

Let’s be real for a minute. Ageing is a privilege and a reality of life.

When it comes to skincare the term ‘anti-ageing’ is the beauty term drilled into our society, as if ageing skin is a negative phenomenon.

We are here to remind you that your confidence should not be determined by what number of candles you have blown out on your birthday cake.

The term ‘Anti-ageing’ is out. ‘Pro-ageing’ is in.

'Pro-ageing' is a movement that embraces the ageing process positively, emphasising acceptance and appreciation of one’s age rather than striving to reverse it.

It is time to embrace the realities of how your skin changes through life. And adopt a skincare and self-care regime that will enhance your skins health.

So, let’s get into the fourth decade of our skin.

Skin Changes in Your 40’s

In your 40s, your skin undergoes several changes due to a combination of genetics and hormones as well as external factors including sun exposure and lifestyle. Here are some common ways skin ages during this decade:

Decreased Collagen Production

Collagen is essential for skin firmness and elasticity. Natural collagen production starts to decline in your mid-20s, and by your 40s, you may notice sagging skin and increased fine lines. Expression lines around the eyes, mouth, and forehead may become more prominent as skin thins and loses elasticity.

Dryness and Dehydration

Oil production decreases when we age, leading to drier skin. This can result in rough texture and more pronounced fine lines.

Hyperpigmentation and Uneven Skin Tone

Sun exposure over the years can lead to age spots and uneven skin tone, particularly on the face, hands, and décolletage. Variations in pigmentation can become more noticeable, leading to a less even complexion.

Texture and Pores

Skin may feel rough or appear duller due to the slower rate of cell turnover and the accumulation of dead skin cells. Pores may appear larger due to the loss of skin firmness and elasticity.

Perimenopause and Skin Changes

Perimenopause usually starts in your 40s. Perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, brings hormonal fluctuations that can significantly affect your skin.

During this transition, your ovaries begin producing less oestrogen, causing your menstrual cycle to become erratic or irregular. Oestrogen helps maintain skin thickness and moisture. As oestrogen levels decline during perimenopause, skin may become thinner, leading to increased dryness, irritation, and a loss of elasticity.

Perimenopause can lead to many changes, some skin changes you may notice include:

- Acne or rosacea
- Dark “age” spots
- Decreased wound healing and barrier function
- Dry skin, itching or dermatitis
- Hot flushes
- Sagging skin or a loss of plumpness
- Unwanted facial hair

Understanding these changes can help you adapt your skincare routine to maintain healthy, radiant skin during this transitional period.

Tips for Manageing Skin Changes During Perimenopause

Hydration

Use moisturisers with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerine, and ceramides to combat dryness.

Sun Protection

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to prevent pigmentation and protect against UV damage.

Gentle Exfoliation

Incorporate gentle exfoliants to promote cell turnover and improve skin texture but avoid over-exfoliating to prevent irritation.

Active Ingredients

Consider using serums with retinoids or peptides to support collagen production and address fine lines.

An Ideal Skincare Regime for Your 40’s

The older we get, the more we crave quick and easy, yet effective skincare regimes.

Keeping your skincare simple is the way to go. Overuse of products, especially the incorrect products can make your skin barrier weak and can cause unwanted skin concerns.

A skincare routine for a 40-year-old should focus on maintaining hydration, boosting collagen production and addressing specific concerns such as fine lines, uneven skin tone, and dryness. Here is a comprehensive approach using AMPERNA® topical probiotic skincare products:

AM Skincare Routine

Cleanse

Use a gentle, hydrating cleanser like our [BALANCE] Ultra Gentle Soothing Cleanser to remove impurities without stripping the skin.

Serums

Vitamin C and Hyaluronic Acid Serum: Helps with brightness and pigmentation. AMPERNA®'s [REPAIR] Pro+ Vitamin C Hyaluronic Serum is deeply hydrating, restoring smoothness and suppleness to your skin.

[SUPAGLOW] Pro+ Advanced Brightening Serum effectively targets dark age spots and uneven skin tone.

Moisturise

Use a moisturiser that contains peptides or ceramides to support skin barrier function. AMPERNA®'s [HYDREATE] Lightweight Soothing + Emulsion absorbs deeply without weighing heavy on the skin.

Sunscreen

Daily broad-spectrum SPF, required even on cloudy days, to protect your skin against UV damage. [HYDRAPROTECT] Pro+ Bio Soothing Day Mineral CC SPF 15 is a lightweight non-greasy physical SPF formulated with zinc oxide and other skin-loving mineral ingredients.

PM Skincare Routine

Treatment - Retinol

Introduce gradually to promote cell turnover and reduce fine lines. AMPERNA® has two retinol options in the range: [SUPERFOLIATE] Pro+ Bio Resurfacing Retinol RX and Pro+ Bio Resurfacing Retinol ALT which is our pregnancy safe retinol.

Depending on your skin you only need to use retinol once to three times per week. On the nights you do not apply retinol you can apply the same serums as the morning.

Moisturise

The same as the morning.

Weekly Treatments

Exfoliation

Use a gentle chemical exfoliant (like AHAs or BHAs) once or twice a week to promote cell turnover. AMPERNA®'s [EXFOLIATE] 10% Pro+ Resurfacing Lotion is a leave-on exfoliating lotion containing 10% glycolic acid.

Masks

Hydrating masks or overnight masks can boost moisture levels.

Professional In-Clinic Treatments

Bi-monthly, deepening on your skin and overall skin health goals. In your 40s, non-invasive skin treatments can effectively address signs of ageing, improve skin texture, and enhance overall radiance. Here are some of the best options to consider:

Chemical Peels

Exfoliates the top layers of skin using a chemical solution. Chemical peels help reduces fine lines, sun damage, and uneven skin tone.

Microdermabrasion

A gentle exfoliation treatment that removes dead skin cells. Microdermabrasion improves skin texture, minimises the appearance of pores, and can help with minor scars.

Microneedling

Involves creating tiny micro-injuries in the skin to stimulate collagen production. Skin microneedling improves firmness, reduces fine lines, and helps with scars and uneven texture.

HydraFacial

A multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, and hydrates the skin. HydraFacial’s deeply hydrates, improves skin clarity, and is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Laser Treatments

Fractional laser targets specific areas to stimulate collagen production. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) addresses pigmentation, redness and sun damage.

LED Light Therapy

Uses different wavelengths of light to treat various skin concerns. LED promotes healing, reduces inflammation, and stimulates collagen, with specific colours targeting ageing skin concerns or acne.

Facials

Customised facials focusing on hydration, anti-ageing, or deep cleansing, provides deep nourishment, tailored to your specific skin needs.

These non-invasive treatments can help rejuvenate your skin and maintain a youthful appearance in your 40s while being gentle and effective.

Skin Confidence in your 40’s – An Overview

Building skin confidence in your 40s involves embracing both the changes your skin undergoes and actively caring for it. Here are some tips to enhance your skin confidence during this decade:

Embrace Your Skin Changes

Acknowledge that ageing is a natural process. Focus on what you love about your skin and celebrate your unique beauty.

Shift your perspective towards ageing. Focus on the wisdom and confidence that come with age, rather than solely on physical changes.

Share experiences with friends or join communities that celebrate ageing. Positive reinforcement and support can significantly boost your confidence.

Set a Consistent Skincare Routine

Invest time in a daily simple skincare regimen, incorporate active ingredients like retinoids and antioxidants to address specific concerns.

Protect your skin from UV damage by using broad-spectrum sunscreen daily. This helps prevent further signs of ageing and promotes a more even skin tone.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to maintain skin hydration from the inside out. Avoid or limit consuming alcohol and caffeinated beverages. A well-hydrated body supports a more radiant complexion.

Focus on Nutrition

Eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and antioxidants promotes skin health and vitality.

Be Active

Regular exercise improves circulation and promotes a healthy glow. It also helps reduce stress, which can impact skin health. Engage in activities that boost your mood and reduce stress, such as yoga, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy. Mental well-being reflects on your skin.

Treat Your Skin to Professional Treatments

Consider non-invasive treatments like chemical peels, microneedling, or laser therapies to address specific concerns and enhance your skin’s appearance.

Say Goodbye to Negative Influences

Avoid comparing yourself to unrealistic standards set by social media or advertising. Focus on your personal journey and progress.

Skin confidence in your 40s is about acceptance, self-care, and embracing the beauty of ageing. By taking proactive steps to care for your skin and nurturing a positive mindset, you can feel more confident and radiant at any age.
