Treating Acne - Dos and Don’ts

Treating Acne - Dos and Don’ts

Posted by Kiri Yanchenko on

Acne vulgaris is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become plugged with excess oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells. This leads to inflammation and the formation of various acne lesions. Presenting as whiteheads, blackheads, or pimples on the face, acne can also appear on the back, chest, and shoulders.

Acne can be influenced by many factors such as hormones, genetics, and certain medications. There are generally six main types of acne.

If you suffer from acne and/ reoccurring acne, it can be frustrating and have a negative impact on your self-esteem. Diagnosing the root cause of your acne is crucial as treatment looks different for everyone.

Treatment options dermatologists recommend, depending on the type of acne you suffer from, can include:

  • topical medications (tretinoin, a stronger version of benzoyl peroxide, or an antibiotic called Clindamycin)
  • oral medications (such as antibiotics, birth control pills, Isotretinoin)
  • lifestyle changes (overhauling diet, exercise, stress and sleeping habits)

In severe cases, a dermatologist may recommend additional treatments such as drainage/extractions, steroid injections, laser therapy or chemical peels. *It is important to do your research before deciding what treatment you will undertake to help your acne. Side effects of acne treatments vary depending on the method you choose and the strength of the medication.

Fortunately, there are a few at-home self-care steps you can take to help manage your acne.

Treating Acne Dos

  • Keep your face clean by using a mild, gentle cleanser, morning, and night. Avoid harsh scrubbing, as it can irritate the skin and make acne worse.
  • Use non-comedogenic skincare products.
  • Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays by wearing sunscreen every day.
  • Stay consistent with your skincare routine. Do not try too many products and treatments at the same time.
  • Use a cold press on inflamed acne lesions to help reduce swelling and redness.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support overall skin health.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Change your pillowcases and bedsheets regularly to prevent bacteria build up.
  • Shower or cleanse your skin after exercise to remove sweat.
  • Manage stress levels through regular exercise, adequate sleep, and relaxation techniques.

Treating Acne Don'ts

  • Avoid picking or squeezing your pimples, as it can lead to spreading bacteria, scarring and cause more inflammation.
  • Avoid using heavy and/or oily skincare products that can clog pores and worsen acne.
  • Do not over-wash or over-scrub your face, as it can strip away natural oils and irritate the skin.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • Do not use harsh or abrasive exfoliants, as they can irritate the skin and exacerbate acne.
  • Avoid the use of alcohol, exfoliants, toners, abrasives, astringents, or any fragrances on acne-prone skin.
  • Use caution with face masks, physical facial scrubs, and tanning products.
  • Avoid touching your face frequently to minimize the transfer of bacteria and oils.
  • Do not use multiple acne treatments at the same time, as it can cause excessive drying and irritation.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes and accessories that can trap sweat and bacteria against your skin.
