Is Anti-Pollution Skincare Worth the Hype?

Posted by Erin Cook on

In a word: yes.

Skincare trends come and go faster than you can say “do I even need that?”. Some trends last the test of time and go on to become bathroom staples, whereas others are just that: a trend.

If we had to pick one recent trend that’s worth your time (and money), it’s anti-pollution skincare.

What is Anti-pollution Skincare?

Anti-pollution skincare is a category of products that protect your face against environmental aggressors and pollution particles.

Pollution is having long-term effects on our skin and unfortunately, it’s not for the better. A recent study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that traffic-related air pollution is one of the most common causes of age spots.

When you’re out and about in an urban environment, pollution – including smog and tiny particles of dirt, grime and other toxins – can settle into your skin. These pollution particles penetrate down into the epidermis, where they speed up cellular deterioration, causing hyperpigmentation and even premature ageing.

Staying indoors isn’t an option – and that’s where anti-pollution skincare comes in. The right skincare regime can wash away pollution and build up the skin barrier so that it can protect itself from environmental aggressors.

How Does Anti-pollution Skincare Work?

The AMPERNA® range supports the all-important skin barrier and protects against pollutants using our active probiotic complex, Lactococcus ferment lysate. We worked with one of Australia’s most experienced skincare chemists to formulate an entire range containing this skin-changing strain of probiotic.

Probiotics benefit skin in a number of ways. As NYC Dermatologist Dr. Whitney Bowe, author of The Beauty of Dirty Skin, explained to Forbes: “When you apply probiotics topically, they act as a physical shield like a barrier, blocking harmful microbes from causing inflammation or infection.”

Our active probiotic complex, Lactococcus ferment lysate, gently helps to protect against pollution and foreign invaders. This strain helps to strengthen the skin barrier and can act as a protective layer; it helps to fight bad bacteria; it helps to defend against free-radical damage; it helps to actively boosts skin with a hit of good bacteria; it helps to soothe and calm irritated skin. The real question here: is there anything probiotics can’t do?

Who Would Benefit from Anti-pollution Skincare the Most?

It goes without saying that city-slickers are more exposed to harmful pollutants than most. If you live in an urban area and have compromised skin, it’s worth exploring whether your skin issues are pollution-related.
